Review sessions and annotations

“I’ve been using DJV to do reviews (videos and image sequences side by side), and since I didn’t have all the video formats and wanted a complete package, I compiled it myself. After the first review, I thought a *.djvr file type to save the review setup would be useful, and after two more reviews, DJV gained a review panel.”

@MattRM2

DJV 3.6.0 introduces MattRM2’s review panel into the player: draw and write on a frame, save the entire session — media, comparisons, view, color, interface — to a .djvr file, and reopen it exactly where you left off, without ever leaving DJV.

  • Review sessions: the entire state of a session (media, A/B comparison, view, color, interface) is saved to a “.djvr” file and reopens identically. Double-click the file, and the session picks up right where it left off.
  • 2D annotations: freehand vector drawing on any frame, with pencil and eraser tools and adjustable color and thickness. Strokes stick to the image through zoom, pan, and comparison mode changes, with keyboard undo/redo.
  • Timestamped notes: text comments attached to a specific frame, displayed only on that frame.
  • Timeline markers: frames carrying a note or drawing are flagged, with two buttons to jump from one to the next without scrubbing.
  • Review ranges: named frame ranges — set your in/out points, save them under a name, and recall them with one click.
  • Safety net: crash-recovery autosave, plus guided relocation when media files have moved.

Thank you MattRM2, for building this and contributing it to DJV.

v3.6.0 · new features

What’s new in this release cycle

Review sessions and annotations

Draw and write directly on frames during playback, and move through a review session without switching to another app. Contributed by community member MattRM2.

Playlists

Build a playlist to move through multiple shots or sequences in one sitting, instead of opening them one at a time.

Wildcard directory filtering with depth

Open a directory using a wildcard filter and a depth setting, so you can point DJV at a folder full of shots and pull in only what matches — no more browsing past everything you don’t need.

Live sequence reloading

Reload an image sequence and DJV picks up any new frames that have landed since you opened it, so you can check in on a running render without closing and reopening the file.

Python bindings and a full Python DJV example

DJV now ships Python bindings, along with a full Python version of DJV as an example — a real starting point for scripting your own tools or workflows on top of it.

Camera raw format support

Read camera raw formats directly — CR3, NEF, ARW, DNG, and others — without converting them first.

OpenEXR files with HTJ2K compression

Read OpenEXR files compressed with HTJ2K.

Automatic OCIO input color spaces

DJV can now determine the OCIO input color space automatically, including reading the OpenEXR “colorInteropID” attribute, so you’re less likely to be looking at a shot in the wrong color space by default.
