Grizzly Peak 3D is proud to announce our collaboration with Kdenlive on the successful implementation of native OpenTimelineIO (OTIO) support for the popular open-source non-linear editor.

Download the new version 25.04.0

OTIO is the open-source API and interchange format developed by Pixar and maintained by the Academy Software Foundation. It provides a common language for editorial timeline data across industry leading tools like Avid, Resolve, Premiere, and Nuke Studio.

This feature brings the latest open-source tools from the Academy of Software Foundation to more studios and creators.

Kdenlive previously used Python to support OTIO. Thanks to funding from Kdenlive’s dedicated community, they hired Grizzly Peak 3D to integrate OTIO into the core Kdenlive C++ code. This enhancement makes life easier when upgrading and maintaining the system.

The Kdenlive community now has a consistent, streamlined path for editorial collaboration and expanded functionality within broader post-production workflows.

Studios and independent creators using Kdenlive can now import and export timelines while preserving essential editorial data, including:

  • Multi-track and multi-clip structures
  • Guides and markers for labeling and organization
  • Basic transition data

Grizzly Peak 3D’s ongoing roadmap for this integration includes support for:

  • OpenTimelineIO archive bundles (.otioz) bundles introduce a new way to package the timeline and associated media together for both archival and delivery needs
  • Image sequence clips
  • Multi-timeline projects
  • Round-tripping metadata – makes interchanging with other systems more seamless.

Grizzly Peak 3D builds high-performance open-source software for visual effects, animation, and film production. Our mission is to empower studios and creators with tools that integrate smoothly into modern pipelines, helping them move faster and collaborate smarter.
