DJV is now on PyPI

Install DJV with pip, for Python 3.12 or newer on Linux, macOS and Windows:

pip install DJV_viewer
djv

That’s it. The djv command launches the full player. If you script your own tools, the same install also gives you the Python bindings DJV is built on. They’re importable as djv, alongside tlrender and feather_tk, and in 3.7.0 they’re now built with nanobind.

See the documentation for details.

Tip: Python 3.12 or 3.13 is the easy choice for now. The bindings depend on OpenTimelineIO, which doesn’t yet have prebuilt wheels for Python 3.14 or Intel Macs. On those, pip builds it from source, which needs a C++ compiler and the Python development files (python3-dev on Debian and Ubuntu, python3-devel on Fedora and Rocky).

v3.7.0 · new features

What’s new in this release cycle

Matroska, CineForm and APV export

Export movies to Matroska, with FFV1, AV1, H.264, HEVC and VP9 written to “.mkv”. CineForm movies can now be read and written, and movies can be exported as APV.

Smarter OCIO color handling

Automatic OCIO input color spaces now follow all of a configuration’s file rules, including the default rule. DJV also reads the OCIO environment variable to set up its OCIO settings, so it picks up the same config as the rest of your pipeline.

Linux desktop integration

The Linux package now includes a desktop entry and icons, so DJV shows up in your application launcher like any other app.

Color tool updates

Exposure and soft clip now live in the Color section of the Color tool. A new global toggle and reset lets you switch all color controls off, or clear them, in one step.

Play individual audio channels

Solo individual audio channels to check a specific mix, stem or language track.

Start playback from any frame in a sequence

Open a single image from a sequence and playback starts at that image instead of at the first frame. The HUD now also shows the file name of the current image as you play.

Touch screen gestures

DJV now supports gestures on touch screens.

OTIOZ bundle media

Media inside OTIOZ bundles can be read through the FFmpeg command line.

UI changes in 3.7.0
Interface refinements
  • The status indicator shows the options in use. Click one to open its controls.
  • The status bar shows the tooltip for the highlighted menu item.
  • The left and right arrow keys move between menus.
  • The file browser filters by kind of file: images, movies, audio, and so on.
  • The FFmpeg settings show the ffmpeg and ffprobe commands being used.
  • The view’s color buffer now defaults to RGBA F16.
  • Settings and logs have moved to the application support directory, and System Information now shows the settings path, log path and Linux desktop.
  • A CJK font is now bundled with the application, replacing the custom font settings.
  • General style updates across the interface.
Bug fixes in 3.7.0
What got fixed
  • Playback performance fix: color management no longer slows playback when the timeline shows thumbnails. This was a regression in 3.6.0.
  • High Quality filtering fixes: pictures shown or exported at their own size are no longer softened, and enlarging no longer shows resize artifacts.
  • Audio fixes: audio no longer crackles when playing faster or slower. Files with a mono audio stream per channel now play all channels, and a still image paired with an audio file lasts as long as the audio.
  • Timecode fix: a movie’s start timecode is found even when a subtitle or other data track comes before its timecode track.
  • Opening many files at once no longer reads every one of them.
  • HUD fix: the heads-up display no longer reports the color and pixel of a closed file.
  • USD support, removed in 3.6.0, is back in source builds.
Library updates · 3.7.0
Updated dependencies
  • FFmpeg updated to 9.0.1.
  • OpenAPV 1.1.1.0 added.
  • Python bindings now use nanobind.
  • Building DJV now requires C++20.
